John Herbert, EVP and CIO at 20th Century Fox, and HP President and CEO Meg Whitman, discussed the partnership of the two companies as part of the HP Discover keynote presentation, a Hewlett-Packard event that concluded late last year.
“Digital is really changing everything,” Herbert said. Television distribution has been through a complete change, which yields tremendous opportunity, as it allowed 20th Century Fox “an opportunity to rethink our digital ecosystem. The converged cloud strategy is so important for us.” For Fox, the first step was moving from a traditional to a converged infrastructure with the help of HP, increasing their ability to respond to technology needs. “We’ve been able to accomplish this all in about a six month period,” Herbert added, the fastest this has been done in the history of business.
In addition to supporting the studio’s global needs, 20th Century Fox also provides services in nine countries. Herbert explained, “It’s movies, television, sports content, providing an on demand media cloud, at the same time, providing a competitive cost for internal customers.” The new converged infrastructure “gives us the agility we need, at the same time the ability to manage cost.”
Whitman pointed out that there are 1.8 million files per year being moved – eight petabytes of content. “You are an example of do more with less, do more without paying more,” she said to Herbert.
“Every IT organization has the same challenges,” Herbert said, “every day coming in, it’s really the unknown. The ultimate lesson for this converged cloud strategy is the ultimate flexibility our infrastructure provides. We are targeting a 70 percent reduction in our data center with this new strategy.”
Whitman asked what was next on 20th Century Fox’s journey, and Herbert explained that “now that we have a solid foundation, our goal is completing the final stages of this journey, which is converged cloud. All within a timeframe of 12 months and we’ve completely transformed our business.”
