Syncsort, a 43-year old software firm that helps enterprises extract business information from their aging mainframes and bring that data into Hadoop without having to jump through hoops, has extended its partnership with Hortonworks in a push to catch up on the fast-moving distribution landscape.
The company is capitalizing on the rising popularity of the batch processing framework with DMX-h ETL Edition, a speedy data transformation and integration tool that enables users to efficiently move different workloads into HDFS without any plumbing work.
“For the grownup companies who are using Hadoop: what good is your next generation Big Data cluster if it can’t access your actual data, and 70 to 80 percent of corporate data is still stored in the mainframe. So this allows them to get access to that mainframe data and also helps them to save a lot of money,” Syncsort CEO Lonne Jaffe explained in an interview on theCUBE at Amazon’s re:Invent event (see his entire commentary below).
The solution, which competes with Talend and Informatica, is now certified for use with the latest version of the Hortonworks Data Platform. Introduced in October and ported to Windows two weeks ago, HDP 2.0 takes advantage of YARN to let companies analyze large data sets in real time with a consistent level of service. The platform also supports interactive SQL queries through the Stinger Initiative, a three-phase plan led to make the Apache Hive data warehousing layer “up to 100 times faster” than before.
“Hadoop is a powerful platform for performing data transformations, but such functionality has long required advanced users to write long, complex code to sort, transform and integrate data,” says Wikibon Principal Research Contributor Jeff Kelly. Syncsort’s DMX-h ETL Edition provides non-expert users powerful but simple drag-and-drop tooling to perform data transformations in Apache Hadoop and now with the Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) 2.”
Users can download a trial version of DMX-h ETL and test it in the Hortonworks Sandbox 2.0, a single-node Hadoop cluster running in a virtual machine, before committing to a purchase.
