Fusion-io moves up the storage food chain with new flash arrays
Fusion-io, a leading maker of PCIe flash cards for servers, is looking to make a name for itself in the broader storage market with two new systems that utilize speedy ioMemory solid-state drives to provide high-performance and scalability for enterprise workloads.
The first addition to the company’s product line-up is the ION Accelerator, an all-flash appliance that packs up to 32 terabytes in a 4U chassis and delivers 1.7 million random IOPS, 56 microsecond access latency and 23GB/sec of bandwidth for transactional and sequential workloads. Fusion-io says that the box is between 25 to 40 times faster than traditional alternatives and supports a wide range of use cases through integrations with widely-used solutions from Oracle, SAP, IBM and NoSQL vendors.
The system is joined by ioControl Hybrid Storage, which combines flash with disk for increased performance at a lower price point. Geared towards small to medium enterprises, the platform is described as capable of accelerating databases, applications and virtual desktops tenfold while giving admins more control over their workloads. Shared storage resources can be prioritized depending on the requirements of each app to eliminate “unpredictability,” Fusion-io said.
“Enterprises of all sizes trust Fusion-io flash memory to accelerate the applications that are critical to their success, and with integrated all-flash and hybrid flash appliances, Fusion-io is making it easier than ever to add performance that enhances existing IT infrastructure,” said Fusion-io chief strategy officer Gary Smerdon.
The ION Accelerator is now shipping to early access customers and will launch in North America this spring. The Fusion ioControl Hybrid Storage appliance is available through VARs across the US and EMEA in three configurations ranging from 16 and 160 to 48 and 192 terabytes of flash and disk, respectively.
Storage of the future

As far as the modern datacenter goes, Fusion-io is one of many industry leaders rethinking strategy and product alike. Virtualization plays an important role in the efficient, scalable datacenter of tomorrow, and ioVDI is really looking to aid the enterprise with this software-deiven solution.
“The full value of fluidly defining data center performance only arrives when the applications running in virtualized environments are well understood,” says Lee Caswell, VP Virtualization Products Group at Fusion-io. “Fusion ioVDI applies our deep understanding of desktop operating systems to deliver the first software-defined virtual hosted desktop experience at a cost that works equally well at 100 or 10,000 users.”
This broader move into the storage market means bigger opportunities for Fusion-io, and a dedicated pipeline that considers strategic partnerships and product launches. Open source is enabling service providers like Fusion-io to compete in this broader market, particularly aiding in interoperability to forward automation initiatives in the modern data center.
“Solution providers are taking the concepts of Open Compute Project and making them digestible and easy to consume for customers,” said Gary Orenstein, the CMO at Fusion-io in a recent interview with theCUBE. “Today at Fusion-io we issued some news with two of these solutions providers that we’re working with: Hyve Solutions is one, Quanta Computer is another. And as an example, from Hyve or Quanta, you can buy fully integrated OCP solutions that include Fusion-io flash memory.”
