In the wake of the Big Data explosion, Oracle has found itself playing catch-up on several fronts. Now, faced with growing pressure from investors to offset weakening demand for its proprietary software and declining maintenance revenues, the firm is doubling down on product development in an attempt to make up for lost time and get back on the saddle before the competition closes in.
Larry Ellison’s renewed push for market relevance is reflected in the newly announced Oracle Mobile Security Suite, an extension of the company’s existing Identity and Access solutions that promises to make it easier for enterprises to manage employee devices.
“Oracle Mobile Security Suite brings the strength of Oracle’s Identity Management platform to mobile devices, and as a result helps organizations address the BYOD challenge with a logical approach,” according Amit Jasuja, the firm’s senior vice president of Java and Identity Management. The software separates corporate data from the personal information stored on a user’s device, which could be a mobile phone, tablet, laptop or even a traditional desktop, and provides “granular control” that enables admins to maintain the delicate balance between security and privacy.
“By extending security and access capabilities to mobile devices, organizations can protect corporate resources on employee devices without compromising the user experience,” Jasuja said. The key to achieving that is isolation, which the suite delivers through a secure workplace where corporate policy can be enforced without fear of inadvertently affecting personal apps. To make things even simpler, it packs a built-in app catalog and a wrapping tool for custom and third party software, plus out-of-the-box Microsoft Active Directory integration for shared-drive access. Also included are standard security features such as single sign-on, network tunneling and data encryption.
