Red Hat turns a little more to business with Ruby, Nginx and MongoDB support

redhat-logo-cloudRed Hat Software Collections response to changing needs of developers, provides access to newer, updated and reliable versions of popular dynamic languages and open source databases. This allows organizations to develop software faster on a modern platform across physical, virtual and cloud environments without the potential risks of non-supported community projects.

Extending the software collection, Red Hat released a new beta version 1.1 of its software collection for testing. The new beta version includes the stable branch of Nginx Web Server solution, Ruby 2.0 and NoSQL-database MongoDB.

Red Hat aims is to provide developers with RHEL-compatible products access to standard assemblies and libraries software earlier than they would have received through normal Red Hat Enterprise Linux releases cycle. In October and December last year, Red Hat invited users to vote on a number of innovations that they would like to see in the software collections. Software collections 1.1 version includes these innovations.

The software collections 1.1 beta expands two new open source HTTP server options in the form of Apache httpd server 2.4.6 server and nginx 1.4.4. The addition of MongoDB 2.4.9 provides a high-performance document database that provides high availability and easy scalability. MongoDB can use the user IDs and group permissions that are already managed within identity management package for the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) distribution, helping the organization to establish a SSO (single sign on) infrastructure for its employees and contractors.

The other clear winner of the upgrade is the support of Ruby 2.0 and Rails 4.0.2, especially because Ruby 2.0 provides significantly higher performance and stability than its predecessor and furthermore many new features. Rails 4.0.2 allows developers to quickly upgrade to the latest version of Ruby without having to install new Rails. Another new addition is PHP 5.5 and thermostat 1, a tool for the monitoring of instances of Java Virtual Machines (JVM) on multiple hosts.

Earlier this month, the leading provider of open source solutions has updated its OpenShift platform-as-a-service to support .NET applications and added SQL Server to the list of available databases on the solution. The enhancements represent a major push for developers to enabling flexibility in application delivery.

The software collections package consists of various scripting tools, databases and monitoring programs that are useful for web development. Red Hat Software Collections offers the latest and most stable versions of open source runtime components, with a separate update cycle of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Developers want quick access to language-and database-innovation. Red Hat responds by bringing out new versions of the developer-oriented technologies frequently – besides providing stability of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform.

Certification program for Docker

After announcing support native Linux system Docker containers in RHEL 7, Red Hat has decided to expand its certification program that offers its ISV partners application containers built using Red Hat Enterprise Linux that will operate seamlessly across certified container hosts.

For the record, the idea behind the project Docker and the company, is to modify the approach by providing a virtualized autonomous Linux system facilitating the migration and movement of VM applications containers. The pending release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 and Red Hat’s OpenShift PaaS offering will both be certified container hosts, with Docker as a primary supported container format.

“The container certification verifies that the application is packaged such that it does not impact the security, maintainability or supportability of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux runtime in the Docker container,” said Red Hat. “Applications may work on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and they may be packaged in a Docker format, but that does not mean that they can be properly maintained and supported. This is what the Certified Container program addresses.”

Docker is one of the fastest growing open source projects currently. Docker containers provide some of the attributes of virtualization, but without the hypervisor. The application runs in a defined and isolated space on the server and can run alongside several other containerized applications. Docker can grow to multiple apps or be used on public or private servers.

The certification program will give developers, software vendors and service providers a way to confidently deploy Docker apps across RHEL without worrying on installation and maintenance.
