What to expect

 .

EMC World is a notable industry event, yet the legacy storage provider is not immune to the market shift towards hyperscale capabilities and cloud computing. EMC has a strategy different from its rivals, taking a federated approach to IT services with VMware and Pivotal, tackling the PaaS and Big Data sectors. But the big question is, how can EMC maintain its influence across the market without disrupting its entire business?

EMC’s lucrative business reaches into the tens of billions annually according to research firm Wikibon, founded on storage technology steadily losing its appeal in a market moving to the cloud. How can EMC shift to software-defined storage trends, and where do products like ViPR fit in?

ViPR is an especially interesting development for EMC, where highly functional software is placed on commodity disks to shift the value to the software side. With ViPR, EMC hoped to address emerging hyperscale capabilities being offered by the likes of Amazon Web Services, particularly as this technology saves enterprise organizations from having to buy high margin storage boxes. Yet ViPR has not proven its value in the market just yet, and customers question its role in a software-driven IT environment.

During EMC World we hope to learn more about the storage vendor’s goals for software-led infrastructure, and how EMC’s federation can be leveraged to bring its legacy IT portfolio up to speed. Tucci has been a worthy leader for the federation, restructuring EMC with the experienced Jeremy Burton at the helm. How will EMC save its revenue streams?
