IT storage hardware solutions leader EMC acquired flash memory pioneer XtremIO in 2012. EMC’s mission includes promoting data backup and recovery and accelerating the adoption of cloud computing as a viable storage solution. theCUBE’s Dave Vellante and John Furrier caught up with XtremIO’s co-founder Ehud Rokach at the EMC World 2014 IT Technology Conference in Las Vegas.

According to Rokach, XtremIO expects to take full advantage of its parent company’s sales, services, and manufacturing machine, including ramping up production, training, and productivity. EMC is so confident in XtremIO’s solutions that it has issued a $1 Million Guarantee that ensures XtremIO’s services remain inline all the time and under all conditions.

The official guarantee specifies that “the first customer who can prove that their XtremIO system’s inline data services have switched off, throttled back, or defaulted to a ‘system garbage collection’ state gets a $1 million prize.” This guarantee runs through September 30, 2014.

Rokach feels that it doesn’t really matter whether flash is around for the long haul. Why? Because XtremIO built a software stack and architecture that works with any medium that uses random access media, which allows XtremIO’s flash capabilities to leverage emerging technologies.

When looking back at the acquisition and integration process, Rokach was pleasantly surprised. EMC masterfully assessed XtremIO’s team, product, and markets, and worked with the company to build the right plan for its business. “And as long as everyone is working to promote the business, it’s really a completely consistent, mutual interest for everybody,” says Rokach of the relationship between EMC and XtremIO.

When asked how his role had changed since the acquisition, Rokach said that while his role was essentially the same: Do whatever is needed to win in the market. “And frankly,” according to Rokach, “being a part of EMC makes it somewhat easier and makes the goal of being number one that more than realistic.”
