Open-source Apache Hadoop provider Hortonworks Inc. and Hewlett-Packard today announced a partnership to accelerate the adoption of Apache Hadoop in the enterprise. Supported by a $50 million equity investment by HP, the Hortonworks Data Platform will be integrated with HP’s HAVEn Big Data platform to allow HP customers to deploy the Hortonworks Data Platform as the Hadoop component of HP HAVEn.

As part of the deal, HP will also work to certify HP Vertica with Apache Hadoop YARN, the architectural center of Hadoop 2.0. “The ability to understand data and put it to effective use is now more crucial than ever,” said Colin Mahony, General Manager at HP Vertica, in a statement. “We look forward to partnering with the Hortonworks team to deliver innovative Big Data solutions.”

The partnership between Hortonworks and HP will also include Martin Fink, Executive Vice President and CTO at HP, joining the Hortonworks’ board of directors. “Our partnership with Hortonworks exemplifies HP’s longstanding commitment to open-source technology for the enterprise,” said Fink, in a statement.

The investment from HP is the second multimillion dollar investment in Hortonworks in four months. Hortonworks is preparing to go public next year, trying to beat out competitors such as Cloudera. Hortonworks joined the Hadoop IPO race back in March with its announcement of a $100M Series D funding round from asset management firm BlackRock, Passport Capital and all its other existing investors. “The Hadoop market is heating up, that’s clear. This raise from Hortonworks, which comes just a week after a massive raise by Cloudera, indicates to me that the race is on to be the first Hadoop pure-play vendor to go public,” said Jeff Kelly, Senior Analyst at Wikibon, in an interview with SiliconANGLE at the time.

Hortonworks’ partnership with HP is another in a line of strategic collaborations for Hortonworks this year. Hortonworks partnered with Red Hat in February, partnered with LucidWorks in April, and in June announced a partnership with Trifacta. “Trifacta…is a really hot startup focusing on data transformation and helping data scientists to become more productive,” said Kelly to theCUBE co-host John Furrier at the Hadoop Summit 2014 in June.
