MongoDB now offers support for Community Edition of its NoSQL database

small__4154904299NoSQL database king MongoDB Inc., is wooing customers that want to run the Community Edition of its software in production environments with a new support option.

“Our Production Support offering is now available as a standalone service – separate from our MongoDB Enterprise software,” wrote MongoDB marketing director Meghan Gill in the company blog. “This means that Community Edition users now have access to our world-class team of support engineers.”

MongoDB, whose NoSQL database is currently ranked fifth-most popularbehind Oracle, MySQL, SQL Server and PostgreSQL, said the support package provides around-the-clock phone support, with a service-level agreement that states a response time of under two hours, plus advice from its engineers. However, customers should note the package does not include access to the Enterprise version of MongoDB’s database, which offers a number of extras not present in the free to download Community Edition.

These enterprise-only features include the MongoDB Management Service (MMS), on-premise disaster recovery and monitoring, plus advanced authentication options like Kerberos and LDAP.

A second advantage of MongoDB Enterprise is it’s been tested and certified to run on numerous popular operating systems, including Amazon Linux, CentOS, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and Ubuntu.

But for those who just want someone to call on to keep their Community Edition up and running, the new package looks like a good option with MongoDB’s engineers able to provide several services.

“Our highly-experienced support team offers consultative, proactive assistance on topics ranging from schema design, index optimization, performance testing and scaling out,” explained Gill.

The package is priced at $250 per month per production server, or $125 per month for each testing or QA server. That compares nicely with the price of MongoDB Enterprise edition, which comes in two tiers – Core, at $6,500 per year, and Advanced, priced at $10,000 per year.
