Linux vendor CoreOS has made its Docker-centric Enterprise Registry available as a standalone product.

Now, the product can be used with any Docker-enabled operating system, having previously only been available as part of CoreOS’s Premium Managed Linux service.

With the Enterprise Registry software, companies can store and manage images of their Docker apps using any compatible OS. The software is based on tech that CoreOS obtained when it acquired Docker hosting firm Quay.io last August. Quay.io has been described by CoreOS as being a kind of Github for Docker images. If so, then Enterprise Registry can be thought of as the premium enterprise version of it, as it can be installed on premises by enterprises. It comes with granular permissions which means that individual team members can be assigned different privelages – for example, some users can be given permission to modify containers, while others would only have read-only access. Robot accounts can also be configured to perform automated processes.

That Enterprise Registry is on-premises and has granular permissions should be useful for enterprises which wish to use containers, but are unable to do so with cloud vendors due to security and governance concerns. CoreOS says in its press release it’s anticipating “high-demand from customers for a private docker registry without having to piece together open source technology.”

CoreOS Enterprise Registry is available on a subscription basis, with different price bands depending on the number of container deployments per month.

The basic offering is the Starter tier at $10 a month, for up to 20 containers. There’s also a Production tier for those who wish to run up to 50 containers, costing $100 per month. That’s as good as it gets, but CoreOS says larger plans for companies running containers in production will be available soon.
