Tegile Systems
Hybrid array maker Tegile Systems Inc. is pushing deeper into all-flash territory with two new appliances aimed at making the speedy storage accessible to a broader range of organizations. The launch comes as a response to similar gestures from competitors such as Hewlett-Packard Co., which jolted the market in August with the introduction of a $35,000 model that comes in at $2 per gigabyte of solid-state memory.
That’s incomparably cheaper than the $23 per gigabyte that Tegile is promising to deliver with the freshly unveiled T3600, which now stands as its lowest-end product, but the firm claims the platform provides a much bigger punch for the premium price tag. Whereas the HP 3PAR StoreServ 7200 All-Flash Starter Kit comes with three terabytes of raw storage that provides up to twice as much usable capacity thanks to the built-in data optimization features, the startup claims that its new array packs 9.6 terabytes worth of speedy flash capable of holding as much as seven times that amount in practice.
The T3600 also boasts a total of 14 1Gbps Ethernet ports, among other connectivity options, and support for a wide range of networking protocols. It shares those specifications with the other newest appliance in Tegile’s arsenal, the 24-terabyte T3700, which is more cost-efficient at $12.50 per gigabyte but will set customers back a full $300,000 – nearly a third more than the T3600.
Both arrays run the latest version of the startup’s IntelliFlash Operating System, which was also introduced as part of the launch and brings with it self-encrypting drives that scramble data at rest, a much-needed addition especially significant for customers in regulated industries such as healthcare.
Moreover, Tegile says that the new edition reduces the number of steps involved in provisioning a storage value by half and allows admins to create workflows that can automate the process entirely. Even more notably, the upgrade packs a new cloud-based service that collects data from customers’ arrays in real-time to provide visibility into key operational metrics that help troubleshoot problems and plan capacity allocation for future growth.
