Odysee Launches on iOS

A new app called Odysee has launched today, which allows users to back up their photos and videos straight to their home computer from their smartphone. This new way of backing up photos will ensure users can bypass backing up to the cloud, which isn’t always secure and can be pricey.

Once a user has downloaded the app and signed up for Odysee, the app will start looking for all the videos and photos on the device. The videos and photos will then be separated according to when and where there photo or video was taken (called “moments”).

This initial step can take some time, but once it is completed users can then automatically sync their files with their computer at home and access these files across all devices. Storage is unlimited, but users will be able to delete photos and videos that they no longer want.

There is also a social feature, where users can invite friends to either download the app or get their contacts to follow them. The app also allows users to share videos and photos directly to Facebook and Twitter, or send them via text message or email.

Raghavan Menon and Shiva Javalagi, who both have a background in networking, algorithms, caching and embedded software, founded the Odysee start-up. Menon was also the co-founder of Ingot Systems, which Virage Logic acquired in 2007. Based in San Jose, the team of four, received angel funding to the value of $750 000.

The Odysee app is currently available for iOS and an Android version is currently being tested. The service will be free for the first year, but users will have to pay a $5 annual fee afterwards. Odysee says it requires 3 million users, at the $5 fee, in order to be self-sustainable.

According to Odysee’s website the first 10, 000 users will get the app for free for life.
