Intel caters to IoT developers with new platform, hardware and software

This week’s Smart DevOps roundup features Intel’s new Internet of Things (IoT) platform, funding for a new IoT developer device, and a new marketplace for IoT apps.

The Intel IoT Platform

Earlier this week Intel Corp. announced the Intel IoT platform, an end-to-end reference model designed to unify and simplify connectivity and security for the Internet of Things.

“With this platform we are continuing to expand our IoT product family beyond silicon with enhancements to our pre-integrated solutions that make IoT more accessible to solution providers,” said Doug Davis, vice president and general manager, Internet of Things Group, Intel. “IoT is a rapidly growing market but faces scalability hurdles. By simplifying the development process and making it easier to deploy new solutions that address market needs, we can help accelerate innovation.”

Intel also introduced integrated hardware and software products based on the new platform, as well as new relationships with an expanded ecosystem of system integrators that promise to move IoT from infancy to mass deployment.

The new products include Wind River Edge Management System, the latest IoT Gateway, enhanced security for its IoT platform, Enhanced Privacy Identity technology, and the Intel API and Traffic Management solution.

The new platform, complete with hardware and software components, will make it easier for solution providers to move IoT from experimental to mainstream deployments with a flexible foundation. The idea is that data will be unlocked faster to extract meaningful information and value for consumers and businesses.

Thingsee One successfully funded on Kickstarter

Haltian Ltd., a startup created by ex-Nokia Oyj employees, launched Thingsee One on Kickstarter Inc. back in November. The project aims to bring IoT closer to developers in a slick, cheap hardware platform that looks like a pager.

Thingsee One has been successfully funded, surpassing its $99,000 funding goal, shipping by April 2015. It will allow developers to build IoT solutions without having to deal with the tricky hardware component. It is ready to use right out of the box, featuring unlocked cellular connectivity, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE 4.1 connectivity, micro USB 2.0 – for charging and data transfer, micro SD memory card slot, Li-Ion 1900mAh battery that lasts up to a year, and JTAG access on PWB – for SW debugging.

Thingsee One allows you to monitor acceleration, speed, location, temperature, humidity, pressure, 3D orientation & tilt, compass directions, and light levels.

Telus launches IoT Marketplace

Canadian telecommunications provider, Telus Communications Company, is launching a new IoT marketplace that will feature 38 different solutions from the company itself and its partners.

It offers solutions across several industries such as transportation, oil and gas, retail, restaurant, construction, and public safety. A customer choosing to implement a solution can simply add the cost to their monthly bill, but the solutions can’t be bought online. Customers  need to contact a representative as IoT solutions need a more customized approach.

“What we’ve found is when we pull solutions into integrated packaging, its more humanizing and it’s easier for customers to understand,” Greg Stark, Telus senior product manager, said. “Its’ really about simplifying the experience and making it easy to deploy.”
