Twitter Inc.’s micro-blogging platform suffered serious issues Monday evening with reports of a lagging tweet stream and login issues.
At the time of writing (9:30pm EST) tweets on Twitter’s TweetDeck platform were behind by up to an hour, although occasionally newer tweets were being displayed.
At 8:50pm Twitter posted a message to its status blog stating that “We are currently experience an issue with tweeting and a delay in timelines. Our engineers are currently working on this issue.”
Various reports noted that the site went down completely at 9pm, with users unable to login into Twitter’s web interface and instead were presented with the message “Something is technically wrong. Thanks for noticing – we’re going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon.” Note that as of 9:30pm we have not been able to recreate the issue, suggesting that any issues regarding logins may have been rectified.
It’s not clear exactly what is causing the issues, although some have noted that with the Consumer Electronics Show on in Las Vegas Twitter may have experience a surge in tweets; the company historically has had issues with its platform having outages during popular events that cause a spike in traffic.
The new issues with Twitter follow authentication and date issues across various Twitter services December 28th.
We’ll update the post if and when we have new information.
Update 9:44pm EST: there seems to be an issue with sharing Twitter posts. Ironically while attempting to share this very post on Twitter, the something technically wrong screen appears.
Of note, the screen appears when already logged into Twitter, not while trying to log in.
Update 10:30pm EST: tweets now appear to be updating, but the share a post option continues to have problems
Update 12:10am EST: the problem with sharing a post to Twitter has been rectified.
