Borderlands 3 confirmed by Take Two Interactive
Following statements made during Take Two Interactive’s Q3 earnings call, the company has confirmed that it is working on Borderlands 3, the first main Borderlands title to be released on next-gen consoles.
“Looking further ahead, we have a robust long-term pipeline of titles in development, including groundbreaking new intellectual properties and new releases from our proven franchises,” Take Two President Karl Slatoff said during the Q3 earnings call today.
“For example, we can confirm that 2k and Gearbox Software will develop and all-new Borderlands game built specifically for nextgen consoles.”
Slatoff did not go into detail on what the new Borderlands title will involve, but he and other top Take Two staff on the earnings call repeatedly stressed the company’s continued focus on “recurrent consumer spending,” meaning downloadable content, subscription fees and microtransactions. These are not necessarily bad things, but odds are good that Borderlands 3 will feature a sizable amount of purchasable content.
In other Borderland news, this year will also the the release of Borderlands: The Handsome Collection, which will bring nextgen remastered versions of Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, both including all downloadable content. The Handsome Collection will also feature the ability to transfer save data from previous consoles, as well as 4-player split screen co-op play, a first for the series.
Borderlands: The Handsome Collection will be release on March 24, 2015.
Other highlights
Tale Two’s long-time big earner has been the Grand Theft Auto franchise, but the company has diversified into several other high earning, critically acclaimed game series over the last few years. Other games published by Take Two include Bioshock, Civilization, XCOM, and the 2K Sports games.

- Grand Theft Auto V is the highest rated game on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, with a “near perfect” Metacritic score of 97
- NBA 2k15 was the highest rated sports game of the year based on average Metacritic score
- Grand Theft Auto Online will see more purchasable content, including heists
- The WWE SuperCard has been downloaded over 6 million times since August
- Evolve is on schedule to launch February 10, 2015
