Have game mods gone too far? Selfies, Ponies, and more

Mods (short for “modifications”) are often singled out as one of the primary benefits of gaming on a PC as opposed to a console. Fan-made mods can be as simple as minor quality of life improvements like streamlined menus or larger text, or they can be as complicated as complete standalone games.

In fact, several well known games began as mods, including Counter StrikeTeam Fortress, and DayZ.

But sometimes mods get… well, a little odd. Whether they’re quirky fun or just plain weird, mods showcase some of the more creative parts of the gaming community.

The selfie stick of Doom

Doom still has a sizeable following for a game that is over two decades old, and one modder took it upon himself to update the game with the most modern invention possible: the selfie stick.

Linguica’s InstaDoom mod takes Doom into the the 2010s by adding no less than 37 selectable Instagram filters, as well as replacing certain weapons with a selfie stick. The selfie stick allows players to take pictures while standing next to their favorite demons and interdimensional portals, shortly before being torn apart.

Posh mudcrabs, colorful ponies, and cheese

Few games have been modded more than Skyrim, and it is almost harder to find things that haven’t been done in the epic fantasy game. You want mudcrabs with top hats and monocles? No problem. Want Skyrim to look like The Legend of Zelda? Also covered. Feel like destroying your enemies with a raining hellfire of cheese wheels? Do you even have to ask?

If you really want to give yourself nightmares, you can even mod the game’s dragons to look like monstrous mutations of “Macho Man” Randy Savage. If you’re into that sort of thing. Weirdo.

The Skyrim mod that adds characters from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic isn’t really weird as far as mods go. It’s pretty tame actually, especially compared to some of the more disturbing mods. But one thing does set it apart: The mod has been downloaded nearly 17,000 times.
