The CIO of AAA Allied Group, Rob Pickering, said that the company — the 12th largest AAA club in the United States — went through three different ITSM platforms before it arrived at ServiceNow.

“We wanted a project management tool,” Pickering said in an interview with theCUBE at ServiceNow’s Knowledge15 event in Las Vegas. “We had one group in a project tool and same group working in an ITSM platform, and we didn’t have any single record of all of their work, their efforts, their resources, and no common process logic. So we started looking at ServiceNow.”

Streamlining the development process

AAA Allied went live with the platform in early 2014 using a single CMDB. Soon, other departments wanted on board. “In many places it’s replacing SharePoint lists, spreadsheets, even e-mail,” Pickering said.

AAA Allied’s IT department uses ServiceNow’s Demand Management to evaluate what goes on the portal. “We also use ServiceNow’s Service Creator app to create full blown apps that we deliver to our business lines,” Pickering stated. “That allows them to manage request forms themselves.”

App Creator streamlines the development process. “The development platform becomes ServiceNow, so you’re not using Ruby, Python or PHP,” Pickering said. “All our staff needs is a JavaScript skill set, and they can start developing apps in ServiceNow. The App Creator minimizes the time to turn out those apps because you’ve got templates built for small, medium and large applications with different feature sets.”

A desire to create

Potential employees interested in joining Pickering’s team merely need a desire to create. “If they’re passionate and have a desire to learn, we can start someone on projects that don’t require any coding,” he noted. “And then we can move them through the process as core system developers in JavaScript.”
