COO Dan McGee on ServiceNow as a company and a service | #know15

Dan McGee, chief operations officer of ServiceNow, sat down with John Furrier and Dave Vellante at ServiceNow’s Knowledge15 event in Las Vegas to discuss both the company and the technology under the hood. The first thing McGee explained was the purpose behind ServiceNow.

In essence, the idea is to provide companies with a DevOps solution without the hassle of building a DevOps solution. Further, ServiceNow allows companies to move into the Cloud using a safe and reliable infrastructure. “The enterprise needs to have a rock-solid foundation that they’re going to trust,” he said.

ServiceNow delivers control

The discussion moved to the issue of multi-tenant versus multi-instance design. McGee spoke about how multi-tenant models are popular for consumer-facing applications that can treat their customers as a large group. However, enterprise solutions require more individual control, transparency and individuality, which is why ServiceNow operates on the multi-instance model.

Security was also a concern, which McGee acknowledged. To provide that security, ServiceNow employs both internal and outside security tests and audits. “Security is probably our primary focus,” he said.

Vellante brought up the subject of availability, noting that ServiceNow measures availability at the customer level. McGee responded by saying that it publishes its availability data, which is not a common practice in the Cloud world. To back up its commitment, ServiceNow offers credit when services drop below a certain level of availability.

A day in the life of ServiceNow

“The mindset of the folks at ServiceNow is, you know, what’s the next problem around the corner, what’s the next thing to solve?” McGee said, talking about the culture at the company. The secret of the company’s success, he said, is taking things one step at a time. This motto has served it well, as ServiceNow now provides 16 data centers around the world and is investing to meet future customer demand.

“We have climbed what others would imagine were insurmountable mountains,” McGee said. “But we’ve gotten there. And we’ve done it by just taking one step at a time.”
