With the CoBattery case you never have to charge your iPhone again

A group of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) students have taken to Kickstarter to fund a project aimed at eliminating the need to charge your iPhone. Relying on battery swapping instead of conventional charging, CoBattery is an iPhone case that comes with two rechargeable and swappable batteries. One battery stays in the case powering your iPhone while the second battery stays in the charging dock ready to be used when the first runs out.

CoBattery currently supports iPhone 5, iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 and the team claims it can give your iPhone a full charge in a matter of seconds.

The CoBattery case weighs 2.57 oz, including the removable battery and thanks to a custom lightning connector the case doesn’t extend past the bottom of the iPhone. While it does add a little bit of bulk to the iPhone, it appears to be a very slim design overall.

Under the hood, each battery stores 3200 mAh which equates to more than 1.5 times the capacity of standard iPhone 6 batteries. As a result, with the CoBattery case fitted you should get 2.5 times longer battery life than on the standard iPhone battery. The creators figure this will give users more than two days of regular phone use before they have to swap batteries.

CoBattery increases iPhone battery lifespan

Lithium-ion batteries typically deteriorate over time as there is a finite number of discharge/recharge cycles they can endure. CoBattery’s creators claim the battery case protects your iPhone’s internal batteries:

“When you put a charged battery on your CoBattery case it will first charge the internal iPhone battery to 100 percent and from then on the phone will run off the battery on the case. With normal usage, your internal iPhone battery will remain at 100 percent charge, and your phone runs off of the CoBattery.”

Protects your iPhone from bad falls

The removable battery is designed to eject from the CoBattery case in the event of a fall. This, claims the team, helps absorb kinetic energy and protects your phone from the impact. The case is manufactured from high-strength, shock resistant plastic to ensure further protection.

The project has raised $15,953 against a $60,000 goal from 173 backers with 24 days to go. You can reserve your CoBattery case with two batteries and a charger for $75 and, if the project achieves its goal, you should receive your case by December.
