Roger Frey talks about the growing flash storage market | #emcworld

Roger Frey, VP of Enterprise Application Solutions at EMC, stopped by theCUBE during EMC World 2015 to speak with Jeff Frick on the subject of enterprise solutions and flash storage.

The conversation started with Frey explaining the role of his team at EMC, including covering the workloads of a typical enterprise environment, such as messaging, collaboration and database concerns. The team also works on business applications, end user computing and mobility. Their goal is to work with customers to produce optimized solutions for an enterprise environment.

A growing market in video

Frey spoke about how video surveillance technology has proven to be an excellent opportunity for EMC. He mentioned how EMC supported around a million cameras and provided the storage space for all the video those cameras would capture. Storing all that video data has become a strong impetus for innovation.

Companies are discovering flash and XtremIO

The discussion turned toward flash and the benefits it provides. EMC’s flash system, XtremIO, has become quite popular. As prices have fallen, the technology has expanded into new markets. Besides the benefits of extremely low latency and quick processing, flash has allowed companies to reduce their storage footprints. Flash needs less space, less cooling and eats less power. This has come with a significant savings in storage costs.

Because of this, customers are deploying flash in more traditional environments. EMC and XtremIO are there to help ease companies into the transition to a flash infrastructure.

“The uptake of flash has been truly amazing,” Frey said.
