Apple, IBM roll out Apple Watch support to first wave of enterprise iOS apps

An update to Apple’s mobile enterprise apps web page shows that Apple and IBM have started rolling out Apple Watch support for a select number of MobileFirst for iOS apps in the healthcare, public safety and energy industries. (via 9to5Mac)

Judging by the updated app descriptions, Apple Watch support allows the existing iOS apps to send push notifications to the wearable, ostensibly making it easier for professionals to access alerts and notifications when their hands are otherwise engaged.

Three MobileFirst for iOS apps have been updated to include Apple Watch support:

Hospital RN

This healthcare app for iOS (pictured above) uses iBeacon technology to identify patients by location so nurses can find their records and provide appropriate care.

Push notifications on iPhone and Apple Watch alert nurses to review new patient requests, changes in lab status, safety alerts, and prioritized task lists for immediate action. And Apple Watch lets nurses quickly view notifications so they can stay more focused on patient care.

Incident Aware

The Incident Aware app for iOS provides public safety officials a bird’s eye view of a scene’s perimeter that includes GPS map data, the location of those involved in an incident, and live video feeds updated in real time.

[…] in tight situations, public safety officials can receive urgent alerts right on Apple Watch.

Field Connect

Aimed at field technicians in the energy and utilities sector, Field Connect delivers safety information based on location and local conditions alongside personalized in-the-field training to users’ iOS devices.

Push notifications provide late-breaking news on severe weather, outages, hazards, and crew member information. And with Apple Watch, field technicians can view important alerts, without stopping what they’re doing.

Apple and IBM have released 22 enterprise focused apps to date, and it is likely that the remaining 19 enterprise iOS apps will also be updated to include Apple Watch support at some point in the near future.

First announced last July, the Apple and IBM partnership aims to release 100 enterprise focused iOS apps by the end of the year, with any new additions to the stable likely to come with Apple Watch support baked in from the get-go.
