

As is customary, Apple will announce new features and product enhancements at next month’s Worldwide Developers Conference, slated to kick off on June 8. One of the announcements, according to a report from The New York Times Wednesday, is a rewards program rolled into Apple Pay.
[…] analysts have noted that a missing piece from Apple Pay was a rewards program to keep users returning to participating merchants. People familiar with Apple Pay said that next month, Apple will announce such a program offering perks to consumers who make purchases with the service, though they declined to reveal details.
The report, which focused on Google and Apple’s respective mobile payments strategies, gave no further details of what an Apple Pay rewards program could potentially entail.
CurrentC, a rival mobile payments provider, supports loyalty and rewards cards directly in its app, allowing users to add charge cards and rewards cards to the app for ease of use.
Apple, by contrast, only lets users store loyalty and rewards cards in Passbook – making for a less elegant solution with no direct access from Apple Pay.
Judging by the wording in the report, Apple may extend its offering to include some form of rewards system directly linked to users’ Apple Pay transaction. These could include cash refunds, loyalty points, or more.
Google is slated to launch Android Pay, its API for third-party app developers to include mobile payments in apps, at the company’s I/O developer conference this week. The platform is said to support loyalty and rewards programs natively.
Apple Pay is also gaining support for Canadian financial institutions in iOS 9, according to a report from 9to5Mac earlier this week. This seems to indicate that Canada will be the first country to support Apple Pay outside the U.S.
