Buying Wunderlist: Microsoft ticks off another acquisition
We reported yesterday that Microsoft was rumored to have acquired 6Wunderkinder, the German company responsible for making the smart list making app, Wunderlist. Today Microsoft made that official. Although it’s thought Redmond paid between $100 million and $200 million for the company whose sole focus is on Wunderlist, an app that featured in the Mac App Stores Best Of list 2013, the terms of the deal have still not yet been revealed.
One of many task management apps on the market it does what you’d expect: it helps you make and share lists, keeping track of what you have to do, and helping you tick off tasks completed that can be shared with others. There is also a public lists feature that includes things such as Best Ofs relating to music and movies, Must Dos for all sorts of places around the world, as well as the expected Bucket Lists.
Although there are paid options for the app, including Wunderlist Pro and Wunderlist for Business, that offer extra features including the ability to send larger files, adding unlimited notes, and unlimited collaboration features, the basic app is still free.
Writing about the acquisition in a blog post Microsoft said, “We could not be more excited to welcome the team at 6Wunderkinder, the creator of Wunderlist, to Microsoft and OneNote. The acquisition of this market-leading to-do list app known for its simplicity, ease of use and innovative design fits squarely with our ambition to reinvent productivity and help people achieve more across all major platforms and devices – particularly on mobile.”
Wunderlist reported that the app was used by no less than 11 million users back in February, while the company recently reported that that number has grown to 13 million users who’ve created a staggering one billion to do lists at time of writing. Christian Reber, Founder and CEO of Wunderlist thanked investors in a recent blog post for helping the company achieve a dream come true, adding, “We’ll introduce a host of new features, continue growing the ecosystem of partner integrations and progress in delivering Wunderlist to billions of people.”
The basic and Pro versions are available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, Windows, Kindle Fire and the Web.
