Because you can never have enough internet connected devices, a French company has launched the worlds first Connected Bikini (in French: bikini connecté.)
The idea for the bikini came from the designer seeing sunburned people at a beach, with Marie Spinali, Head of Design at Spinali, the company behind the design, telling The Telegraph the project came from an off-the-cuff remark after seeing people looking like lobsters still in the sun.”
To prevent sunburn, the bikini includes a removable UV sensor that measures exactly when sun cream should be applied or re-applied for those sporting the bikini by the pool, or down on a beach.
The sensor, not surprisingly, is also waterproof, so there are no problems with going for a swim with it in place.
The tech is fairly simple: a user inputs, via a supporting mobile phone app their skin type. The sensor itself monitors the ambient temperature, and communicates that back to the app, which calculates, based on a users’ skin type, exactly how long it will be until they need to slap on more sunscreen to avoid be sunburned.
A user is then advised by the app when they need to take action; as a note to those with dirtier minds, no: the bikini sensor does not vibrate.
How much for a smart, internet-connected bikini?
Well, they’re not cheap, coming in at €149 ($167.)
If wearing a bikini isn’t your thing (i.e. you’re male) or you don’t want to spend quite that much, there is good news: the same company also offers a smart beach towel.
The smart beach towel features the same sensor as in the bikini, is waterproof and removable as well, and will only set you back a somewhat more modest €99 ($111.)
There’s no word on whether the smart connected bikini or the beach towel will be sold outside of France, but the company does have an online shop; where they ship to though isn’t immediately clear however as the site is in French.
