Battle of the phablets: Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ vs. ZTE Axon Pro
On Tuesday, Chinese smartphone maker ZTE Corp. announced the Axon Pro, a phablet designed specifically for the United States and aimed at the premium market. That means it will compete with offerings from Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and Apple.
Both those companies have new phablet-sized handsets in the works, but rumors suggest Samsung will beat Apple to market with its new Galaxy S6 edge+; Apple is expected to unveil its new iPhone 6s range sometime in the fall.
If the Axon Pro is to compete with Samsung’s Galaxy S6 edge+, we need to know how it stacks up. We won’t know what Samsung’s new phablet brings until its official launch, but below is a blow-by-blow comparison of the Galaxy S6 edge+’s rumored specs to what the Axon Pro offers:
Galaxy S6 edge+ vs. ZTE Axon Pro: Display
Galaxy S6 edge+: Rumors suggest the Galaxy S6 edge+ could feature a massive 5.7-inch screen curved on both sides like the 5.1-inch Galaxy S6 edge it is based on. It may be a 2K or 4K AMOLED display with QHD resolution.
ZTE Axon Pro: The Axon Pro has a firmly phablet-sized 5.5-inch, Quad HD display with 2560 x 1440 pixels at 534 ppi.
Galaxy S6 edge+ vs. ZTE Axon Pro: Processor and storage
Galaxy S6 edge+: SamMobile claims the Galaxy S6 edge+ will ship with Samsung’s own Exynos 7420 processor, despite rumors that the company was considering a Snapdragon 808 processor. The Exynos 7420 is the same chip found in the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge and combines a 64-bit octa-core processor, GPU, storage, 3GB of RAM and an LTE modem in one chip. Onboard storage will start at 32GB with no microSD card reader.
ZTE Axon Pro: The Axon pro is no slouch, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset with 4GB of RAM, 2.0GHx Octa core CPU, and Hi-Fi Audio Chipset, 32GB of onboard storage, and also no microSD card reader.
Galaxy S6 edge+ vs. ZTE Axon Pro: Camera
Galaxy S6 edge+: Samsung is likely to stick to the same 5MP front camera and 16MP back camera with f/1.9 apertures and optical image stabilization.
ZTE Axon Pro: The camera is where the Axon Pro really stands apart from the Galaxy S6 edge+. The Axon Pro boasts a dual lens rear-facing camera with one 13MP lens and one 2MP lens and a dual LED flash. This offers pre and post photo editing options, including refocusing an image after the fact.
The front-facing camera offers 8MP with 4K HD video capture.
Galaxy S6 edge+ vs. ZTE Axon Pro: Design
Galaxy S6 edge+: Samsung will likely stick to the same design as used for the Galaxy S6 edge and offer the same color options, including White Pearl, Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum and Green Emerald.
ZTE Axon Pro: The Axon pro offers a combination of metal and plastic with a metal back battery cover and a combination of colors, including Phthalo Blue with a rose gold grill pattern, Ion Gold or Chromium Silver, both with a silver grill pattern.
Galaxy S6 edge+ vs. ZTE Axon Pro: Operating system
Galaxy S6 edge+: Likely to ship pre-installed with Google’s latest version of Android, Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.
ZTE Axon Pro: Ships with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.
Galaxy S6 edge+ vs. ZTE Axon Pro: Release date and price
Galaxy S6 edge+: No details are available as yet, but considering the Galaxy S6 edge’s pricetag of $699, expect to pay upwards of $700 without a contract. Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy S6 edge+ on August 12, and sales should kick off August 21.
ZTE Axon Pro: The Axon Pro is unlocked, sold on the pre-paid model and retails for $449.98 directly from ZTE or from Amazon, eBay, and Newegg. The company expects to start shipments from July 27.
