For many years it has been common for tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons, Shadowrun, Call of Cthulhu, Vampire: The Masquerade and others to be adapted into video games, sometimes successfully and sometimes not. A growing trend over the last few years has seen the process happen in reverse, with tabletop adaptations being made of successful video game series like Dragon Age and Warcraft. Now it looks like CD Projekt RED’s popular Witcher series will be the latest games to make their way from the couch to the table.

“The Witcher Role-Playing Game will allow tabletop RPG fans to re-create an array of characters known from the Witcher universe and live out entirely new adventures set within the world of Geralt of Rivia,” CD Projekt’s Community Lead & Website Coordinator Marcin Momot wrote on the studio’s forums.

To create the game, CD Projekt will be teaming up with R.Talsorian Games, the tabletop studio that developed the successful Cyberpunk 2020 tabletop game, which CD Projekt is currently developing into a highly anticipated video game.

“Powered by Fuzion, the same ruleset that made Cyberpunk 2020 gain worldwide player acclaim, The Witcher Role-Playing Game will feature a myriad of spells, rituals, and curses; favorite gear and items from the entire Witcher series including a bestiary of devilish monsters players can face during their adventures,” Momot wrote. “The system will provide all the necessary tools to create and play out your own adventures and become everything from a battle-hardened monster slayer to a merchant kingpin controlling a vast network of contacts.”

While this will be the first Witcher pen-and-paper game, it will not be the first time Geralt of Rivia has graced the dining room table. Last year, CD Projekt teamed up with popular tabletop game makers Fantasy Flight Games to create The Witcher Adventure Game, which allows up to four players to take on the roles of the series’ main characters in a story-based board game.

Momot said that The Witcher Role-Playing Game will release in mid 2016, and more details about gameplay and pricing will be released at a later date. Hopefull the RPG will not be subject to the same kinds of delays as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Then again, the quality of The Witcher 3 proves that delays are not always a bad thing.
