The calm before the storm: VMworld 2015 Day 1 recap | #VMworld

With an important VMware, Inc. announcement expected on Day 2 of VMworld 2015, Dave Vellante and John Furrier of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, wrapped up day 1 at VMworld 2015 in San Francisco by calling it the “calm before the storm.”

Tick tock

On Tuesday, hedge-fund giant Elliott Management Corp.’s timeclock expires on the standstill provisions made with EMC Corp.’s (the holding company for the Federation’s assets) CEO Joe Tucci. Elliot wants to spin VMware off into a standalone company, while EMC would like to keep it as part of its Federation. Vellante and Furrier expect to hear many details from theCUBE’s scheduled guests tomorrow, which include Pat Gelsinger, CEO, VMware, Inc.

High stakes and battles

Furrier believes that the stakes are very high at VMworld 2015. As he stated, “Culture, diversity, DevOps and ease of computing are all happening, and it’s going to be interesting to see it play out.”

According to Vellante, VMware has many battles in front of them, many of which they can win. However, the blind spot is the public Cloud. He pointed to the competition in the space and the constant and significant growth of Amazon Web Services (AWS). Opportunities are available for VMware because the enterprise is nervous about moving to the public Cloud, but he indicated, “That is a tiger that VMware doesn’t have by the tail yet.”

The talk of the day culminated with the fact that VMware needs to develop its own identity and keep innovating.
