Splunk .conf2015 tackles machine learning and systems of intelligence | #splunkconf

theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, traveled to Las Vegas for the 6th annual Splunk .conf2015. Even as the event kicked off, attendees talked animatedly about Splunk, Inc.’s growing product base and its role in machine learning and systems of intelligence (also known as Splunk IT Service Intelligence – ITSI).

An evolution in machine learning

John Furrier, Jeff Frick and George Gilbert, cohosts of theCUBE, discussed Splunk’s evolution in machine learning.

“Splunk made it easy to analyze a lot of data,” Gilbert said. “Initially, Splunk was like Hadoop years before. It was an application. It worked right out of the box. One of the most popular applications was security, to find behavior that was not normal. Security attacks are getting so sophisticated, one human can’t figure them out. Machine learning builds a model that can tell what’s not right.”

Furrier noted that Splunk also brings a DevOps and cloud approach to ITSI. Gilbert responded that he looks forward to “drilling down” with guests on this topic.

More timely security solutions

Security will also get much attention during the conference.

“Splunk is used to working with live active data and finding anomalies,” said Gilbert. “It also needs to analyze user behavior: how to find anomalies between how people act and how machines act. Sometimes it takes days or months for a company to find out if it’s been attacked. How can we shrink that down to take action sooner?”
