Microsoft sweetens the deal for Windows 10 with ‘Easy Trade Up’ program

Microsoft is hoping to bait new Windows 10 buyers through a new program called “Easy Trade Up” that’s designed to let them cash in on their old machines.

For a limited period only, Microsoft is willing to pay up to $200 for old Windows machines, and $300 for Apple MacBooks, for those who’re looking for a trade-in.

To take advantage of the deal, consumers must buy a qualifying Windows 10 computer from the Microsoft Store, and it must be priced $599 or above. Microsoft added it will send consumers the rebate only after their purchase has been completed and claim validated.

As The Verge points out, Microsoft has made these kinds of deals before. One of the more famous ones was its offer to pay $200 to each iPad user who traded in their tablet for a Surface Pro. It’s also offered $100 for PS3 owners who wanted to buy an Xbox One, and a whopping $650 discount on the Surface Pro 3 in exchange for an Apple MacBook Air.

Of course we should point out that buyers might well get a better deal hawking their old machines on eBay, Craigslist or even down the pub. For example, the Gazelle trade-in website is paying up to $539 for an “as news” MacBook Air.

Microsoft’s offer runs until October 20, which means there’s only a couple of days left for those who’re interested. Once their purchase has been made, customers will have 14 days to claim their trade-in cash.

Microsoft said it requires customers to package and send their old PCs to it by themselves, and added it could take up to 28 days to validate each claim. The old PCs must also meet a few conditions – namely, they must be under six years old, in good working order and with a minimum display size of 11.6 inches.
