How user experience shapes the way networks operate | #NXTWORK
Wireless networks are literally everywhere and pervade every corner of most users experiences of the Internet and the devices around them. Behind any good show is a crew that goes unnoticed but provides a critical infrastructure and service that without them the experience would be shattered.
That’s why it’s “all about Wi-Fi,” according to Ron Gill, VP of Americas enterprise sales at Ruckus Wireless, Inc. John Furrier, cohost of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, sat down with Gill at the Juniper Networks NXTWORK 2015 event in Santa Clara, CA, and got the scoop on how Juniper plays into Ruckus’ unique success and how user-experience is driving a high-value industry.
Expectations
The fact stands that no matter where a user travels these days there’s the “expectation that Wi-Fi access is there.” Gill explained that the phone is the “lowest common denominator.” The result of users demanding a seamless experience, be it on apps like “snapchat and instagram,” requires a higher density of Access Points (APs) compared to older technologies like laptops, which are higher power and more stationary than smartphones.
Ruckus successfully differentiates itself by utilizing “over 100 patents” in nearly every AP deployed and provides a unique packet routing on a per-user basis with intelligence software, Gill said. Furrier pointed to the company’s successful IPO as proof of its ability to differentiate in a difficult market.
The backend
What many users don’t realize is that the forward-facing Wi-Fi only makes up about “20 percent” of the infrastructure that provides those users access. Most of the infrastructure is actually in the backhaul and networking that gets to those access points. This is where Juniper’s Junos OS and the ability to have a common core and networking language that users understand becomes critical, as Juniper is the “core of most networks.”
In terms of scale, Wi-Fi APs are the “tip of the spear” in terms of the networking solution. Ruckus, however, is a uniquely tipped spear compared with other traditional providers like Cisco Systems, Inc. and focuses on user-experience as a driving basis going forward. At this event, in particular, Gill noted that collaboration “between partners and customers” of Juniper is the driving force.
