Microsoft readies its next major Windows 10 Fall Update release

Microsoft is on the verge of issuing its first major update to Windows 10. Officially called the Windows 10 Fall Update, the upgrade adds new functionality and a number of bug fixes to the operating system.

The final test build of the updated OS, number 10586, was rolled out to Windows Insiders late last week, and will be available to download for everyone else as part of the next Patch Tuesday.

The most noticeable change is that Skype will now be incorporated as part of the operating system. Microsoft killed off the old ‘Metro’ style Skype app earlier this year with this change in mind. Skype is now a fully integrated part of the OS in the latest build, which means it can be accessed from anywhere even without the full Skype program being installed. Skype itself has been updated too, with a new messenger app and video call features.

Meanwhile, Microsoft’s personal digital assistant Cortana has been getting pally with Uber Technologies Inc., and that relationship means hailing a black cab is as easy as saying “hey, Cortana”.

The biggest design change sees the introduction of colored top bars above each app. The idea is to make the differentiation between newer ‘Metro’ apps and traditional programs a little more consistent.

For enterprise users, the big news is the launch of Windows Store for Business, which we mentioned last week. The new business-orientated app store promises to make it easier for IT managers to manage and deploy Universal Windows Platform apps, with the option to assign apps to individual employees, buy licenses in bulk, reclaim licenses from ex-employees, and even publish your own apps into the Windows Store without making them available to the general public.

There are plenty of mandatory bug fixes in build 10586 too, including a fix for a bug in the Start Menu that prevents some apps from appearing there if too many are installed. The Edge browser has also been enhanced with tab previews and favorite syncing.

Although this is a major update, Microsoft is actually planning an even bigger one for next year. That update, which is codenamed “Redstone”, is expected to add more cohesion between the Windows ecosystem and non-desktop devices such as mobile phones, the Xbox One and the HoloLens.
