Microsoft and Square Enix reportedly “very happy” with ‘Rise of the Tomb Raider’ sales

Despite being disappointed that the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot sold “only” 3.4 million copies in its first month, compared to a projected figure of nearly twice that amount, Square Enix Holdings Co Ltd is reportedly happy with the performance of the game’s sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider, which was released as a timed exclusive on Xbox One and Xbox 360 on November 10, with a PC and PlayStation 4 release coming sometime next year.

“Microsoft and Square are very happy with Rise and the dev team, thanks for the concerns,” game director Brian Horton said in a response to a thread on the Tomb Raider forums. “Crystal [Dynamics] and Eidos Montreal made a game we are proud of and we appreciate the overwhelming number of positive reviews and fan feedback.”

“We’re looking forward to the Game Awards next week where we are nominated for Best Action Adventure and Best Performance for Camilla [Luddington],” he continued. Luddington is the current voice of Lara Croft. “Wish us luck, hopefully it’s just the beginning of the recognition Tomb Raider and Lara Croft receives this year. It’s cool to see her on top again for the second game in a row. We’re all fans and for me it’s been the honor of my career to be a part of such a fantastic legacy. Next year 20th Anniversary!”

Horton would not mention specific sales figures for the game, which went head to head with the massive launch of Bethesda Game Studios’ Fallout 4 by releasing on the same day, but he did point to the positive reviews Rise of the Tomb Raider has been receiving in the media.

“The dev team is not responsible for sales and therefore we look to reviews and releasing on time to gauge our performance,” Horton said. “We accomplished these goals. The press considers Rise of the Tomb Raider a high quality game based on the scores.”
