8 cheaper alternatives to Apple’s Smart Battery Case for iPhone 6/6s

Apple’s Smart Battery Case for iPhone 6 and 6s (pictured above), launched on Tuesday, has attracted more than a few critical reviews, including disappointment at the peculiar design, the comparatively high cost at $100, and the fact that it provides less extra battery life than many cheaper third-party cases.

Whether you love or hate “the hump,” Apple’s own Tim Cook came out in defense of the Smart Battery Case saying, “if you’re charging your phone every day, you probably don’t need this at all. But if you’re out hiking and you go on overnight trips… it’s kind of nice to have.”

So, if “the hump” doesn’t appeal to you and you find yourself in need of some extra juice for your iPhone 6 or 6s, here are eight cheaper alternatives to Apple’s (pricy) Smart Battery Case…

AnkerAnker Ultra Slim Extended Battery Case

Rated as the number one iPhone 6 battery case by The Wirecutter, the Anker Ultra Slim Extended battery case lives up to its name by measuring in at a thin 0.23 inches and weighs just 2.9 ounces.

The 2850mAh battery capacity promises 120 percent longer battery life resulting in an extra 60 hours of music listening, 17 hours more talktime and 12 hours of extra to fool around on the web.

The case has a matte exterior to provide better grip and protection for your iPhone. At $40 from Amazon, it’s easy to see why Anker’s battery case is so highly rated.

Anker PremiumAnker Premium Extended Battery Case

If you’re looking for even more battery life and protection, the Anker Premium Extended battery case has a 3100mAh capacity that promises 130 percent more juice. That equates to an extra 65 hours of music, 18 hours of talktime and 13 hours of looking at cat GIFs.

At 0.29 inches thick and 3.5 ounces, it’s a little chunkier than its sibling but boasts a drop tested polycarbonate shell and raised bezel rims to keep your iPhone 6 or 6s safe.

At $48 from Amazon, it seems a good deal.

Tylt EnergiTylt Energi Sliding Power Case

On the higher-end of the price scale, the $77 (from Amazon) Tylt Energi has a big 3200mAh capacity and a unique sliding sleeve design that allows you to use the case with or without the battery, making it the most versatile battery case on our list.

It feature high-speed charging and will automatically stop charging you phone when it reaches 100 percent to save power for later.

If you are budget-minded and don’t need all that much extra juice for your iPhone, mophie’s Juice Pack Reserve is a tough choice to beat. At $60 (directly from mophie), the Juice Pack Reserve has an 1840mAh capacity, good to extend you iPhone’s battery life by 60 percent. It sport level 2 high-impact protection, an LED charge indicator, On/Off switch and at 2.76 x 5.90 x 0.58 inches it weighs just 2.65 ounces.

mophie’s standout feature is its “Priority+ Charge and Sync” technology that charges your iPhone first when a charger is connected to the case. This means that if you decide to take the case off for any reason, your phone will always be fully charged.

If you can throw a bit more cash at the problem, you can go for one of three higher-capacity mophie cases: the 2750mAh mophie Juice Pack Air (100 percent more battery life for $100), the 3300mAh mophie Juice Pack Plus (120 percent more juice for $120), or the 3950mAh mophie Juice Pack Ultra (150 percent extra battery life for $150).
