Dell creates new Extreme Scale Infrastructure (ESI) unit

Dell Inc. last week created a new Extreme Scale Infrastructure (ESI) business unit that consolidates all of its data center hardware.

The new umbrella organization will house the various businesses of Dell’s that build customized and optimized infrastructure for hyperscale companies like Amazon.com, Inc., Google and Facebook, as well as other hardware heavy firms in the oil, gas, telecommunications and other industries.

According to Dell, the company’s eight-year-old Data Center Solutions (DCS) unit is no longer fit for purpose. As is the four month old Datacenter Scalable Solutions (DSS) unit, which was only just created to cater to the “just-below-hyperscale market”.

The Texas-based firm now says the ESI unit is now “the overarching organization where DCS and DSS will reside”. Dell says it did so in order to provide more clarity for the industry about its hyperscale strategy and lineup. It also wants to house all the employees, resources, strategy and tools under one roof, added James Mouton, vice president and general manager of the new unit in a blog post.

“What needed to be better communicated to customers, however, is that DCS and DSS is one team,” Mouton wrote. “ESI reflects our commitment to customers and partners, and allows us to better communicate our team’s broad capabilities to uniquely serve our customers.”

Dell didn’t actually go into much detail on what’s new about the new business unit, which leads us to believe that this is merely an organizational change – there’s no new strategy to speak of. Not yet, anyway.

As to how this will fit into Dell’s plans to shunt all of its server businesses under EMC Corp’s umbrella once (if?) it completes its takeover of that company, we’ll just have to wait and see.
