Sony Computer Entertainment boss expects devs to take more risks with new game IPs

When the top games of the year are a never ending stream of sequels, prequels, remakes and reboots, it can be easy to assume that major game studios are going to keep playing it safe to rake in the easy money, but Sony Computer Entertainment President and CEO Andrew House says that developers may be more willing to take risks than you might think.

“With this generation, we launched against a background of considerable media scepticism about the role of consoles overall,” House said in a recent interview with the Guardian. “People were saying that consoles were dead, and that mobiles and tablets were the only gaming platforms around. But what I see in the developer and publisher community is a sense of returned confidence.”

“That translates into something great for the gamer,” he continued, “because if developers are feeling confident that there’s a fan-base that wants their content, then they will tend to take more creative risks. They will feel more comfortable about launching brand-new IP, which I think is the life-blood of the industry.”

Sony itself is taking one such risk with its recently announced partnership with Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima, who is working on an entirely new game franchise for PlayStation that he promised would offer “a new and innovative gaming experience.”

With PlayStation 4 recently turning two years old, House said that the game lineup for the console is only going to get better.

“Usually it’s in the second or third year of a lifecycle that you see developers really getting into their stride around a new platform,” House said. “When we started out in the business, the founders of the organisation had a very strong focus on taking creative risks, and believed that bringing something new to games was what we should be all about.”
