Is capacity planning the best way to save? | #BMCDay

It’s been said that the cheapest infrastructure you can get is the stuff you already own. Milan-based company Moviri SpA takes those words to heart and offers custom capacity planning and IT optimization. The remarkable thing, said Renato Bonomini, manager of the company’s U.S. operations (Moviri, Inc.), is that businesses rarely know how much they could use the service.

“I have customers who say, ‘Oh, we don’t need capacity planning. We always buy twice as much as we need,'” he told Brian Gracely and Stu Miniman, cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team. “OK, tell me again how you know how much you need if you buy twice as much as you need?”

Capacity planners wake up in the morning and think about cutting costs, according to Bonomini. The analytics and knowledge involved is often why people are not in a rush to dive into it. “It’s not sexy, let’s face it,” he said. But it’s all about saving money in the end, and the amount saved can be very attractive to customers if they’ll sit for a consultation.

Silo or cloud

Renato noted that some customers think that since they are moving to the cloud, capacity will be less of an issue. But he contends that capacity planning is an even more important in the cloud. He said that while they do have some customers with tons of servers, cloud customers can benefit and save just as much if not more.
