Assassin’s Creed movie releases new production stills with star Michael Fassbender
You have to hand it to Hollywood, it really won’t give up on the idea of making a video game movie no matter how many of them utterly suck.
There are already a few major video game adaptations releasing next year, including the highly anticipated Assassin’s Creed film starring Michael Fassbender. This week, the studio behind the movie has released several new production stills, giving us a better glimpse of what we can expect from the film.
The new pictures include some recognizable imagery from the Assassin’s Creed series, including the Templar and Abstergo symbols, as well as the iconic assassin’s hood. They also depict Fassbender as both his modern day character, Callum Lynch, and his 15th century Spanish ancestor, Aguilar.
When he was first cast in the role, Fassbender admitted that he was not much of a gamer, but he was intrigued by the world of Assassin’s Creed.
“I don’t really play that many video games, but when I met up with the guys from Ubisoft and they started to explain this whole world and the idea of DNA memory — you know, I think it’s a very feasible scientific theory,” Fassbender said in an interview last year. “I just thought, ‘This is so rich,’ and about the possibility of it being this cinematic experience. So I’m really excited about it, and we’re working very hard to make sure that we’ve got the best and most exciting, original package.”
Will we see characters from the games?
So far, the only confirmed character from the Assassin’s Creed games that has made it into the film is Alan Rikkin, the CEO of fictional company Abstergo Industries, who will be played by Jeremy Irons.
It is unclear if any other characters from the game series will appear in the film, but it is worth noting that Ezio Auditore da Firenze, the fan favorite protagonist from Assassin’s Creed II and its direct sequels and spin-offs, lived during this same time period.
Aside from arguably being the most popular character in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Ezio also played an incredibly important role in the overarching story, having rescued the assassins from destruction and rebuilding their entire organization.
Ezio even visited Spain in the year 1491 in the mobile-only game Assassin’s Creed II: Discovery, where he encountered Christopher Columbus and other historical figures, so it would not be too much of a stretch for him to make a brief appearance in the film depending on what exactly “15th century Spain” means.
Ezio’s father, Giovanni, had also been an assassin for many years during this time period, so even if the timeline doesn’t line up to give us Ezio, there is still the possibility that the film’s creators can make a small nod to the games.
