Need more power? Here’s how to boost your Windows 10 laptop battery life

Whether you have a new or an old laptop, getting the most out your laptop battery can be crucial especially when you are not close to a power point.

These six tips for Windows 10, including turning on Battery Saver, adjusting brightness and volume will help boost your laptop’s battery life.

Ensure you turn on Battery Saver

The first step to conserving your laptop’s battery life is to turn on Windows 10’s new Battery Saver. The Battery Saver feature will adjust screen brightness, prevent apps running in the background and stop push notifications.

To switch Battery Saver on, click the Action Center in the bottom right-hand corner of the taskbar, click Battery Saver.

If you would prefer not to have Battery Saver on all the time, you can change the battery settings to automatically switch on Battery Saver when your battery level dips below a certain point. Click on the Start menu > Settings > System > Battery Saver > Battery Saver Settings > adjust the scrolling bar to indicate the percentage when Battery Saver must kick in.

Tip: Regardless of whether you have set up Battery Saver to automatically kick in at a certain percentage, it will switch on once your laptop battery dips below 20 percent.

Adjust your laptop screen’s brightness

The Battery Saver feature in Windows 10 will automatically adjust your screen’s brightness to help save your battery life. However, if you do not have the feature switched on you can manually adjust the brightness. Click on the Start menu > Settings > System > Display > move the Adjust brightness level bar down.

Turn the volume down

Turning the volume down on your laptop’s speakers can help you save some of your battery life. You can adjust the volume by clicking the speaker icon in the right-hand corner of the taskbar.

Tip: If you do need to listen to something, rather opt for a pair of headphones as they will put less pressure on your battery than your laptop speakers.

Switch off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

If not in use, switching off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth can have a great impact on your laptop’s battery life.

Click the Action Center in the bottom right-hand corner of the taskbar, deselect Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to switch either or both of these connections off. Alternatively, you can select Airplane mode in the Action Center and all connections will be cut. When you need the connections back, simply deselect Airplane mode.

Remove USB’s from your laptop

Even if you are not using the USB that is plugged into your laptop, your battery will still be powering it so it is important to unplug any USBs that are not in use so they do not have a negative effect on your battery life.

Adjust your laptop’s power and sleep settings

To adjust how much time must elapse before your laptop’s screen dims or it goes into sleep mode, click on the Start menu > Settings > System > Power & sleep > select times from the drop-down menus to suit your specific needs.

If you have made all these adjustments to save your laptop’s battery life and it still has not had an effect then it may be time to replace your battery. Read our article to see how you can generate a battery report in Windows to see if it’s time to replace the battery.
