Everything you need to know about the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge | #MWC16

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. launched its latest flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S7, and Galaxy S7 Edge Sunday night during the Mobile World Congress, and unlike the launch of the Galaxy S6, they didn’t disappoint.

Off the bat, the biggest selling points with the phone are literally a redux of back the future, and in this case, we literally mean ignore the Galaxy S6 and go back to the Galaxy S5, as the S7 sports two things the 5 had: it’s waterproof and it has a microSD card slot.

The base model Galaxy S7 is 5.1 inches whereas the Galaxy S7 Edge comes in at the larger 5.5 inches.

Without any great surprise, both the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge have a 12 megapixel rear camera, but if you like collecting obscure tech terms, Samsung is billing the new camera as the first with “dual pixel,” which is apparently the new name for their Britecell technology. What it actually means is the new camera is said to be better than that on the iPhone’s, has a wider aperture, faster shutter speed, and more accurate focus in low light conditions.

Look wise the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge hasn’t changed a lot from the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge: same glass front and metal back, although Samsung now claims the glass is “3D,” whatever that means.

As aforementioned the Galaxy S7 is waterproof like the Galaxy S5 was, but also comes with an IP68 rating, so it’s dust friendly, for the next time you’re stuck in a sandstorm and need you use your phone.

Internally the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC with a quad-core Kryo CPU and Adreno 530 GPU, while the international version uses Samsung’s own octa-core Exynos 8890 SoC, the latter is said to be 30 percent faster than the Galaxy S6.

The microSIM card on the phone utilizes Samsung’s “Duos” standard, so if you don’t want the extra memory it’s also a hybrid slot for a sim, meaning you can use two sim cards at once. That’s not a thing the American market asks for but it’s a popular feature on phones in both Asia and Africa, and it also makes the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge the first serious phone in the U.S. market to ship with it as standard.

Winning

While the Galaxy S6 is still sold in record numbers, many a critic wrote the phone off as a failure for Samsung, and there was one core reason why: it was a case of Samsung trying too hard to make an iPhone competitor, one that looked good but was same/same; only slightly different.

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, on the other hand, hark back to the Galaxy S5, complete with the things that Samsung fans loved about the flagship range: microSIM card support in particular, but also the waterproofing is a major point of differentiation as well.

As expected, those who pre-order the phone will literally have a Billy Mays “but wait, there’s more” moment, with a Gear VR thrown in for good measure as well; the Gear VR might not be the most amazing virtual reality experience on the market, but likewise it’s something Samsung can offer whereas Apple can’t.

Both phones will ship in the middle of March with the price to be advised.
