Rocket League launches esports tournament series with exclusive Twitch partnership

Rocket League developer Psyonix Studios has announced that it is partnering up with Twitch to launch a professional tournament series for its popular car-soccer video game.

The Rocket League Championship Series will be kicking off with its first three-month competitive season beginning March 25, and fans will be able to watch the action exclusively on Twitch. In addition, Twitch will also be managing the championship series and assisting Psyonix in growing Rocket League’s competitive community.

“From the moment we hit the pitch last July, we knew that Rocket League was a legitimate esport,” Jeremy Dunham, Vice President at Psyonix, said in a statement. “Twitch and its streamers have been an instrumental part of our success since we launched last July, and that made them a perfect match for us. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with a team that we respect as highly as we do Twitch, and we can’t wait to show the world what we can do in esports together!”

“The Twitch community has collectively rallied around Rocket League to help it achieve organic success on our platform,” added Nick Allen, Director of Esports Operations at Twitch. “By working with Psyonix to build an official professional league around this grassroots phenomenon, Rocket League’s legions of players and fans can potentially turn their passion into a career.”

The prize pool for the first tournament season will be $75,000, with $55,000 going to the tournament winners.

Registration for the championship series goes live on March 25, and players will be able to sign up in teams of three people. There will be two one-month qualifying periods, each with a week long open qualifier available to anyone who wants to join.

The competitions themselves will initially be held on both PlayStation 4 and PC, but Psyonix said that additional platform support will be revealed in the future.
