Analysts plot the direction of Big Data as the ‘big boys’ get into the action | #BigDataSV

The key themes at BigDataSV 2016 in San Jose, California, where theCUBE is celebrating #BigDataWeek, including news and events from the #StrataHadoop conference, include developers, cloud, Big Data and the big players who are rolling into town to make their move in the space.

As John Furrier (@furrier), Jeff Frick (@jefffrick) and Peter Burris (@plburris), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, commenced day two of BigDataSV 2016, they ran through the recurring themes so far during #BigDataWeek and what to expect today.

The big boys

“The big boys are here today,” said Burris, who added that these big boys are the companies that have enormous amounts of money to start investing at the margin of what these tools can do and find new ways to create new value. “So I think the keyword today is developers. How are the developers going to enter into this ecosystem and find new ways to create value for businesses through software?”

Burris felt a great deal of attention will be paid to the simplification question because, as he puts it, “It still ain’t as easy as it should be.”

Furrier followed up by saying that Hadoop just has to become easier, and he mentioned that companies like Cloudera, Inc. and Hortonworks, Inc. are trying to accomplish this. “When the big players are getting in, you know it’s serious,” he stated. “They’ve got big investments and customers who can make the big investments with a resource they know can deliver.”

Driving change

Burris went on to say that innovation includes a couple of things: People need to invent stuff and try to improve and simplify the way things work. He said that there needs to be a drive to change the ecosystem so people adopt new practices.

“We will be hearing not so much about invention, but innovating the things the industry needs to do to change the practices of how all of these technologies get used,” he said.

Open data

Furrier talked about Microsoft’s announcement to open up Office 365 to developers and the news that many organizations are opening up their data.

Burris explained that it’s more about how companies will use private data and monetize it, and as a company, how will they move to engaging customers differently. He also noted that companies need to be smart about opening up their data.

The conversation

Tonight during BigDataSV, there will be a presentation by SiliconANGLE covering the relationship between Big Data and big business.
