How to transfer your data from your old iPhone, Android phone to your new iPhone SE

The day has arrived and you can finally get your hands on your new iPhone SE, unless of course your iPhone SE delivery is delayed due to the huge thunderstorm making its way across the midwest. Whether you have unwrapped it yet, or not, I am sure you are eager to find out if the new iPhone SE is all that you dreamed of.

Before you get too excited you first need to transfer all your data from your old phone, whether this is an iPhone or you are making the move over from Android, to your new iPhone SE.

Follow the steps below for step-by-step instructions on how to transfer your data, including photos, videos, contacts, message history, music, calendars, mail accounts, and many of the current apps that you are using.

How to transfer data from your old iPhone to your new iPhone

  • Before you start the transfer process, you need to make a backup of your old device. You can do this via iTunes or iCloud.

iTunes backup:

  • Check that you are using the latest version of iTunes.
  • Connect your iOS device to your computer and launch iTunes.
  • Click on Summary in the sidebar, and then click on Back Up Now.
  • Once the backup has completed, click on iTunes > Preferences > Devices.
  • Find the backup for your device and Control-click that backup. Now select Archive.

iCloud backup:

  • Connect your device to a Wi-Fi network.
  • Tap Settings > iCloud > Backup.
  • Make sure that iCloud Backup is turned on.
  • Tap Back Up Now. Stay connected to your Wi-Fi network until the process completes.
  • Make sure the backup finished by tapping Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage, and then select your device. The backup you just made should appear in the details with the time and backup size.

Tip: If you are saving Health and Activity data and backup using iTunes, you need to ensure you select the option to encrypt the backup or else it will not be saved. For iCloud backups, the data is automatically encrypted.

  • When the backup is complete, switch off your old iPhone. Read our article for details of where you can sell your old iPhone and the amount of cash you could get.
  • If you will use the same SIM card swap it over to your new iPhone.
  • Switch on your new iPhone > swipe left to right on the ‘Hello’ screen > follow instructions until you reach the Wi-Fi screen > select your Wi-Fi network.
  • For iTunes backup: On the Wi-Fi screen > plug your iPhone into your computer > tap Connect to iTunes > follow the setup process. On the Apps & Data screen > tap Restore from iTunes Backup > tap Next.
  • For iCloud backup: After selecting your Wi-Fi network, follow the setup process. On the Apps & Data screen > tap Restore from iCloud Backup > tap Next.
  • Enter your Apple ID and password.

Tip: If you have multiple Apple IDs you will need to sign into each one, alternatively select the option to not use an Apple ID.

  • Select the backup to restore, paying close attention to the date and size of the backup.
  • While the restore is in progress, make sure your iPhone remains plugged into iTunes and that you remain on the Wi-Fi network.

How to transfer data from your Android phone to your new iPhone

  • Download and install the Move to iOS app on your Android phone. The app will transfer contacts, message history, camera photos and videos, web bookmarks, mail accounts and calendars. Read our article for more details about the Move to iOS app.
  • Plug both your old Android phone and your new iPhone into chargers. Connect your Android phone to a Wi-Fi network.

Tip: If you haven’t moved over to the latest iPhone SE, but have bought an older model you will need to ensure your iPhone is running iOS 9 or later (only applicable for an iPhone 5 or later).

  • On your iPhone: Follow the setup process until your reach the Apps & Data screen > tap Move Data from Android.
  • On your Android phone: Follow the transfer process in the Move to iOS app, until you reach the Find your Code screen.
  • On your iPhone: After selecting Move Data from Android, a 10-digit code will appear.
  • On your Android phone: Enter the 10-digit code > on the Transfer Data screen, select the data that you want to transfer.
  • If any data did not transfer to your iPhone you can do a manual transfer. Follow Apple’s tips on how to manually move music, books and pdfs, documents, and apps.
  • Complete the setup process for your new iPhone.

If you were too excited to get a look at your new iPhone and started it up without doing a transfer then you will have to do it  manually, which is going to take a lot of time. Alternatively, erase your iPhone and start the transfer process.
