As cloud technologies continue to effect various aspects the industry, the size of physical hardware is trending down. Nevertheless, mobility is perhaps the most remarkable element of EMC’s virtual software, which has become “an all-flash data center in your pocket,” according to Chris Ratcliffe, SVP of marketing at EMC Core Technologies.
Ratcliffe presented Dave Vellante (@dvellante) and John Furrier (@furrier), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, with two USB sticks at EMC World 2016 in Las Vegas. Ratcliffe said that he had 50 more in his pocket and “nobody knows.” The USB stick contained all of EMC’s virtual software, including its newest release, Unity. During the interview, Furrier and Vellante discussed Unity’s benefits and specs with Ratcliffe.
“2016 has turned into one of our biggest years,” stated Ratcliffe. EMC released Unity last month, ahead of schedule. The company developed the tech with simplicity in mind. Ratcliffe quoted the specs as transitioning from “7U to 2U” and “27 cables to 6 cables.” Unity’s motto is to “get ride of product overlap,” Ratcliffe added, saying these shifts are all part of an effort to “modernize the data center.”
Ratcliffe emphasized that data protection is paramount in Unity and in all of EMC’s vitual software. He encapsulated Unity as a “tiny box” with “massive capabilities.”
He then called his pride in EMC’s line of products “the embarrassment of riches.”
