Stamford Podiatry Group, P.C. has reached out to patients, informing them of a recent data breach. In this attack, an unauthorized party stole several months’ worth of information, and now over 40,000 patients are at risk for identity theft and fraud.
In a letter to impacted patients, Stamford Podiatry Group reports of a “potentially malicious cyber intrusion of [its] computer systems that may have resulted in unauthorized access to [patient] personal information.” The means of access, however, are currently unknown, but they do know that it occurred between February 22 and April 14, so more recent patients should be okay.
According to SC Magazine, the stolen information includes names, birth dates, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and – most concerning – insurance information and Social Security numbers. In other words, everything a cyber criminal would need for insurance fraud, identity theft, or any number of other such crimes.
While there is no evidence yet that the personal information is being misused, the organization is still offering its patients a year of credit monitoring. Additionally, it underwent a forensic review, and has taken measures to prevent any further unauthorized access, including new security measures.
Patients of Stamford Podiatry Group should keep an eye on their email for notification, in case their information was compromised. The credit monitoring will help in case the stolen information is misused, so it’s advised to take them up on the offer.
