iOS 10 tips & tricks: How to enable split-screen view in Safari on your iPad

At Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference that took place last week, the company announced iOS 10 and with it a host of new features including redesigned and improved functionality for its Photo, Map, and Message apps.

At this stage, iOS 10 is only available in a beta version for developers, which you can download if you are part of the Apple Developer Program. Since launching iOS 10, Apple developers have had over a week to explore the new operating system and reveal a variety of iOS 10 features that Apple did not reveal at WWDC. Some of these features include the ability to delete default apps, optimize your device’s storage, improve your sleep routine, and more.

Another iOS 10 feature that will be coming iPad users way in September is the ability to increase your productivity with a split-screen mode called Split-View.

To take advantage of split-screen view on your iPad now, you need to download the iOS 10 beta 1, or the public beta due out in July. Alternatively, you will just need to remain patient until the official release happens in September.

Improve productivity with split-screen view on your iPad

  • To view two Safari websites simultaneously on your iPad, tap the ‘+’ icon to open a second tab.
  • Tap, hold and drag the title of the second tab to the right of the ‘X’ icon.
  • While dragging the second tab, move to the left or right of your iPad’s screen until the main Safari browser shrinks slightly, displaying a grey border.
  • Drop your second tab into the space and your two tabs will be displayed in a split-screen view across your iPad’s screen.
  • In Split-View you can easily drag Safri tabs from one browser to the next. You can also use Split-View with Slide Over, allowing you to browse two websites simultaneously as well as access another app.
  • To disable Split-View and only have one browser, you can simply close all the tabs displayed on the one-half of the screen and you will automatically go back to the traditional Safari layout.

Split-View limitations on iOS 10

  • As mentioned, to take advantage of Split-View in iOS 10 you will need to download the iOS 10 beta 1 that is currently available.
  • You cannot have more than two browsers open at the same time.
  • You cannot resize the two browsers, the default setting at this stage is to split the iPad’s screen evenly down the middle. This could change with subsequent iOS 10 betas.
  • While it is possible to use Slide Over with Split-View you cannot use multi-app split screen mode.
