What with the Windows 10 free upgrade offering drawing to a close, Microsoft is launching one last, all-out effort to get more people to download the OS. It’s ‘nagware’ is going full-screen.
At the weekend Microsoft announced its to begin displaying full screen announcements to Windows users, urging them to install Windows 10. The ads will appear on PCs running Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 from now until the end of this month, when its free upgrade offer expires.
“This notification is a reminder that the Window 10 free upgrade offer ends on July 29, 2016. Microsoft recommends that you upgrade to Windows 10 before the offer expires,” Microsoft said. “You can choose to upgrade directly from the notification, dismiss the notification permanently, or choose to be reminded later.”
There are definitely lots of proponents of Windows 10 who claim the OS is the best thing since sliced bread, but equally there are just as many critics of the platform, who say it’s buggy or incompatible with certain apps, thus making it unusable. As a result, Microsoft has therefore only managed to convince some 350 million users to stick with Windows 10, still a very long way short of its stated goal of getting one billion users in the first two years.
Microsoft has come in for some vicious criticism over the last 12 months for its strategy of forcing Windows 10 onto people, and its ‘reminders’ constantly popping up over and over again. In recent weeks the company began employing devilish tricks in order to fool users into updating automatically, only to backtrack when the criticism reached unprecedented levels. Hopefully, once the free upgrade offer expires, Microsoft will wind down its efforts to push people into using an OS they don’t need or want.
For now, Microsoft says those who choose the “do not notify me again” option will have their choice respected, and won’t see the full-screen update again. It also says those who have previously uninstalled, and those with a PC that can’t support Windows 10, will not see the new ads.
