Atlassian expands enterprise offering with HipChat Data Center: What to expect, how to get started

Atlassian Corp., the maker of software development and collaboration applications, today announced the launch of HipChat Data Center at its annual user conference in San Jose.

Enterprise messaging app HipChat, which Atlassian acquired in 2012, competes with the likes of Slack and recently launched Workplace by Facebook. Atlassian launched its HipChat Server out of beta early last year, which companies can run on their own infrastructure. Now the company has announced a beta version of HipChat Data Center, as an extension of its Data Center portfolio that was launched two years ago.

“We’re committed to providing our customers with the products they depend on every day to support the mission-critical needs of their business,” Cameron Deatsch, head of marketing for the Server line at Atlassian, wrote in a blog post. “With our continued investments in the Data Center product line, you will get the deployment flexibility, authentication, control, high availability, and performance you require for your business.”

Here’s a look at the benefits of the HipChat Data Center, how to preregister for the beta due out in November and the most recent changes for HipChat Server:

Benefits of HipChat Data Center

In addition to the benefits of the HipChat Server — such as the ability to host HipChat yourself as an OVA or AMI, Active Directory support and integration with JIRA, Confluence and Bitbucket — HipChat Data Center includes additional benefits for the enterprise.

HipChat Data Center scales with an enterprise

Unlike the HipChat Server which can only be deployed on a single node, the new Data Server version will work across multiple nodes and is designed for teams larger than 5,000 users.

Enterprise security

All team chats on the HipChat Data Center are protected by enterprise-grade security. Depending on an enterprise’s organizational and legal requirements, features can be turned on or off.

No interruptions during team chats

HipChat Data Center allows an enterprise to cluster multiple active servers, ensuring high availability during team chats.

Sign up for the HipChat Data Center beta

If you are interested in running your own HipChat Data Center you can preregister for the beta now. Head over to the HipChat Data Center site and complete your details to sign up for the beta, which starts in November.

Recent HipChat Server updates: New video experience

Hipchat server - screen share

Earlier this month, Atlassian announced a beta of its new HipChat Video platform available for HipChat Server customers. The new HipChat Video platform is now powered by the latest WebRTC technology, ensuring enterprise users get to enjoy the expected speed and performance at scale.

To get access to the new HipChat Video beta, enterprises will need to have Server version 2.0.5 and clients version 4.2.6 or higher. The beta version can then be turned on by heading to the server admin video settings.

Group video chat

The new video icon allows you to start a group video chat from any HipChat room with all your team members.

To see the new video icon you will need to be running the most recent HipChat app for Mac, Windows or Linux. To start a group video chat, simply click the video icon (video recorder icon) and all team members will be invited to a group video chat.

Invite additional team members to a one-on-one video chat

During a one-on-one private video chat with a coworker, it is now possible to invite additional team members into the discussion. Simply click the person icon > copy the invite URL > share it with additional team members.

Screen sharing during your video call

The new HipChat video platform also allows you to easily share your PC’s screen during a video chat, allowing everyone on the call to view a specific document or browser window on your PC.
