Seattle-based search startup Atlas Informatics Inc. has raised $20.7 million in a round whose investors include Microsoft Corp., former Microsoft Chief Technology Officer Nathan Myhrvold and Aspect Ventures.

Founded in 2015, the company currently offers Atlas Recall, a “search engine for your digital life” that documents everything a user has seen across all of his or her devices, apps and cloud services. Described by Chief Executive Officer Jordan Ritter as “searchable photographic memory for our entire digital life,” Atlas Recall runs in the background of any given device and monitors what a user is doing.

People using Recall are able to tell it what to record and what not to record. For example, a user may wish to index Slack messages but not what was watched on Netflix. The software also integrates with Google search and Spotlight on Mac, allowing web and system searches as well.

“[Recall] works alongside your apps to make the data and information that is important to you easily searchable with context — all without APIs or needing your passwords,” Ritter said in a statement. “That means Recall will remember everything across all your services — yes, everything — the way your brain remembers. I may not remember that my ticket to the game was emailed to me, but I might remember that it was my sister who sent it to me yesterday. I can search for the ticket by using her name and the day.”

Someone building what is essentially a search engine in 2016 is a novel idea, but Atlas Recall does offer something different in that it indexes everything you do. “Google, Spotlight, and Cortana do a great job at helping you find content within a limited sphere,” the company explains. “Google specializes in web searches, while Spotlight and Cortana help you find local files on your device. Atlas Recall makes the search services you use every day better, giving you the power to search for anything you see across your entire digital life with one simple search.”

The company said it would use the new funding to continue to develop Recall.
