SAP reveals its trajectory to the multi-cloud world
The breaking news at SAP’s Sapphire Now event this week in Orlando, Florida, is all about the three Cs of SAP’s multi-cloud offerings.
“Three things to remember, it’s about helping accelerate cloud adoption, consumption, as well choice,” said Emily Mui (pictured, right), senior director of product marketing, Hana Cloud Platform, at SAP SE.
Mui and her colleague Michael Hill (pictured, left), director of product marketing, Hana Cloud Platform, at SAP, joined John Furrier (@jfurrier), co-host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile live streaming studio, in theCUBE’s Palo Alto, California, studio, for a conversation about the latest announcements and what it means for SAP customers. During Sapphire Now, SAP presented an end-to-end digital enterprise platform that gives customers the capability to choose the cloud infrastructure provider that fits into their business model. SAP Cloud Platform will manage customers using Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure (now being offered in public BETA), and, coming soon, Google Cloud Platform.
SAP CoPilot, the core of our the company’s cloud Enterprise Resource Planning solution, acts as a digital assistant to help users to manage and operate the multi-cloud infrastructure through a single, “unified cockpit” in the SAP Cloud Platform.
Cloud, consumption and choice
While the latest offerings provide plenty of choice regarding cloud providers, languages and APIs, SAP Cloud Platform and SAP CoPilot bring simplicity to the process, lessening the burden of cloud vendor lock-in, according to Mui.
“Choice, [is about] multi-cloud. Not everyone wants to stick to one infrastructure as a service provider, they’ve got multiple clouds to manage, and we’re enabling that,” Mui said.
Cloud adoption relies on APIs, and according to Mui, there are hundreds available. She pointed out that in addition to the APIs, there are integration workflows and various content added for customers and partners to be able to leverage, integrate and connect with different applications with SAP’s back-end.
When it comes to consumption, Hill calls it “consumption of innovation.” He explained that SAP is taking customers through the digital transformation with technology such as Internet of Things, which is now out of beta and available and ready to connect people, things and business processes.
“In addition, we’ve added other great technologies like SAP CoPilot, which is allowing you to talk to your enterprise systems. So, initially, that’s with SAP S/4Hana,” Hill said.
Adding to choice and consumption, SAP working with Cloud Foundry allows developers to bring an organization’s own language, or BYOL, HIll explained. So if developers are working in a language that SAP did not support before, this ability now creates instant productivity for building applications on the SAP Cloud Platform.
So as the enterprise is deciding on what cloud infrastructure to move to, whether it is Amazon, Azure or Google, SAP wants to be the vendor to bring them onto whatever cloud the business chooses.
“And where we can help is really on the business service side. We have the right types of application services within the platform as a service offering to enable them to create those types of apps to support their business. … And it’s the integration of data into the application, because that’s what’s important,” Mui said.
