Shippable takes its software automation platform behind the firewall

Enterprises increasingly rely on the cloud to support operations, but many prefer to keep software projects on-premises because of security concerns. Shippable Inc. is moving to target this segment today with a new version of its development automation platform designed to run behind the firewall.

Shippable Server provides the ability to manage the different systems that a company’s software teams employ to handle their code with a set of centralized controls. A configuration engine enables users to specify what role each tool should play in the development lifecycle, combine the definitions into a workflow and quickly execute it when they want to release an update. Configuration files can be shared across an organization to reduce repetitive work.

Cutting the amount of effort involved in rolling out code to production lowers the risk of human error while freeing up developers to focus on other tasks. The result, according to Shippable, is that updates can be released at a much higher frequency than in traditional environments.

Shippable Server’s core automation capability is paired with administrative features aimed at helping companies ensure that everything goes smoothly. Most notably, Shippable Server packs a real-time monitoring console that visualizes development workflows to make errors easily noticeable. It doubles as an auditing mechanism for assessing past activity, which should be appealing to firms that must keep a record of operations to meet internal or regulatory security rules.

Complementing the latter feature is an access control dashboard for restricting who can use what systems. Administrators can limit developers to interacting with only the code repositories, tools and infrastructure necessary for their work to prevent potential compliance violations. This fine-grained control is essential for the kind of companies that keep application code on-premises for fear of their intellectual proprietary falling into the wrong hands.

In the same spirit, Shippable has made its platform compatible with the on-premises versions of the industry’s most popular code repository management systems: GitHub, GitLab and Atlassian Inc.’s BitBucket. The integrations come on top of the several dozen third-party connectors that have been carried over from the original cloud edition of the offering.

Shippable Server is available for $20 per user per month and a $500-per-year “startup plan” geared towards small deployments. It should be appealing not only to emerging teams but also enterprises that wish to try out the platform’s capabilities before committing to a bigger purchase.
